alone are not the answer. I'd go further to say that schools alone are neither
the path to educational success nor the sole route to success for youth in
transition- into successful adulthood. Despite how much time our children spend in
school, they spend much of their waking hours elsewhere: at home, with friends,
at jobs and in youth development settings from day care to sports leagues.
Community leaders should think of the education system as a pipeline that needs
to be insulated to be effective. That means improving all those areas —
including health, safety, life skills, financial and housing stability, and
family life — that surround the pipeline, because these affect achievement in
school. To insulate the education pipeline, all the
key players in our communities — education, business, government, nonprofit and
faith organizations — must come together with youth and families to change the
